With less than 75 days to go to the longest period of global peace in sight. Writes Gordon Sillence
London 2012 Olympic Peace campaign has now formed the largest international collation working on implementation measures for the truce. UNESCO, UNEP and the Global Partnership for Sustainable Tourism joined Ecotrans, the IPT and other tourism and sports stakeholders to support Lord Michael Bates (http://www.walkfortruce.org ) call for a meaningful Olympic Truce.
The London 2012 Olympic Youth Peace Ambassador Training and Assistance Programme aims to bring youths from conflict zones and cities of violence to London build a global peace network linking youths in conflict areas. UNESCO have joined the programme to strengthen their existing youth peace ambassador network, and UNEP will also be delivering part of the training workshops.
Youths have been nominated to come from places such as Haiti, Sri Lanka, Nigeria, Libya, and Rio de Janeiro, and other organisations in countries/cities of conflict are urged to send in nominations before the end of May.
Urgent help is also needed to fund the youths to come to Britain, and the organisers are looking as well for a city and university willing to host the 2 week training event in support of this historic Truce.
More sports and tourism stakeholders are being asked to join and strengthen the coalition further to help bring in financial or logistical support. Vision has been one of the key supporters of this process and we ask all readers to see if they can help at this 11th hour to make this attempt to establish a global peace process successful.
